Location description: Torrevieja, named after an ancient watchtower, has become known for its salt production. Spain produces 4 million tons of salt per year, of which 700,000 tons come (mostly road salt for export, Stand 2014) from the salt flats of Torrevieja. The salt concentration of the Torrevieja Lagoon is increased because brine by means of a tube from the salt mine of Pinoso is conducted into the lagoon. This allows the salt to be harvested all year round.Today, the former fishing village is a multicultural city with a foreign population of 52 percent. The very pleasant coastal climate attracts many rheumatism, heart and asthma patients. The salt lakes and the sea air make sure that Torrevieja is one of the climatically healthiest parts of Europe. The two marinas of Torrevieja are the biggest of its kind in the entire Mediterranean region and have together 1,500 berths.
